HOW ARE ROM-COMS MAKING A COMEBACK IN 2026

Recently, I started noticing that it seems like romantic comedies are becoming popular again. I kept seeing announcements for new romantic movies, especially movies based on romance novels. Some movies I noticed include Finding Emily and The Love Hypothesis. This made me wonder if romcoms were actually making a comeback or if I was just noticing them because I personally enjoy romance movies. Since social media algorithms can show us more of the content we already interact with, my own feed can necessarily be proof that romcoms are making a comeback. So I decided to investigate the claim: Are Rom-coms making a comeback in 2026?. I used the SIFT/Lateral reading approach by looking at the original sources, comparing multiple articles, and then checking specific examples of movies.

STEP 1: Stop and Identify the Claim

The first step is to slow down and identify exactly what I’m trying to prove. The claim is not simply that romantic movies exist in 2026. Obviously, they do. THe stronger claim is that the genre is becoming more popular and visible after being less prominent for years.

The distinction between the two claims matters because my first reaction was based on what I had been seeing online. With social media algorithms personalizing what appears on our feeds, seeing several rom-com announcements doesn’t automatically mean there has been a larger industry-wide trend. I needed to find evidence outside my own feed before deciding whether the claim was true.

STEP 2: INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE

The first source I found was Ellie Rene Dowling’s BYU article “How rom-coms are making a comeback in 2026”, published April 1, 2026. This article was useful because it directly addressed the claim I  was investigating. The article explains that romantic comedies were less popular between 2010-2020 but have become more visible again, mentioning movies such as Materialists and People we meet on Vacation. It also points out that audiences are divided about whether newer rom-coms are actually as good as the classics.

The last point was especially interesting because it showed that “comeback” doesn’t necessarily mean everyone agrees that the movies are better. The article includes people who believe recent rom-coms lack originality and have weaker dialogue than older movies. Therefore, I had to be careful not to treat increased visibility as proof of increased quality.

STEP 3: FIND BETTER COVERAGE

Next, I looked for another source that could either support or challenge what I had. I found Natalie Issa’s Real Simple article, “Are Rom-Coms Making a Comeback Because Dating is so Bad?”. This source gave me strong evidence that the increase in rom-coms is nor just something one writer or one group of students has noticed.

The article points to the success of Anyone But You, which made $220 million worldwide, and describes 2026 as a year with numerous new romantic comedies arriving on both streaming services and in theaters. It specifically mentions The Love Hypothesis, Offices Romances, Every Year After, Voicemails for Isabelle, and People We Meet on Vacation. The article also gives audience numbers for recent releases, including 36 million viewers for Off Campus in its first 12 days and 17.2 million viewers for people we meet on vacation during its opening weekend.

This made the original claim much more convincing because I was no longer relying on one article. I had a second source discussing the same larger trend and providing audience data.

STEP 4: INVESTIGATE THE BOOK TO FILM CONNECTION

One part of the trend that I had personally noticed was how many romantic movies seem to be adaptations of books. I wanted to find out whether that was actually part of a larger movie industry trend, so i looked at universal production music’s article “from page to premiere: Why Book to Film Adaptations Are Defining Modern Storytelling”

The article explains that many of the most anticipated 2026 releases are based on existing books, including The people we meet on vacation, Reminders of Him, Verity, Wuthering Heights, The fourth wing, and many others. It argues that studios and streaming platforms have an incentive to invest in stories that already have established audiences, recognizable characters and existing fan communities.

This helped explain why the rom com comeback may feel especially noticeable to people who spend time on social media or read popular romance books. A movie adaptation does not have to introduce an entirely new story to an audience because the book may already have thousands or millions of fans. That gives the movie built in attention before release.

STEP 5: CHECK SPECIFIC EXAMPLES

Finally, I looked at individual movies instead of only relying on articles discussing the trend. One example is Finding Emily, a 2026 romantic comedy about a lovestruck musician who receives the wrong number for his dream girl and teams up with a psychology student to find her. The movie is listed as a 2026 romantic comedy and stars Angourie Rice, Spike Fearn and Minnie Driver.

Another example is The Love hypothesis, which Real Simple identifies as one of the romantic comedies coming to screens in 2026. These examples are important because they show that the claim is not based on one successful movie. There are multiple romantic projects being released or developed at the same time, including adaptations of popular romance stories.

I also found People We Meet on Vacation on a 2026 IMDB community list of romantic comedies. The listing identifies it as a 2026 PG-13 romantic comedy starring Emily Bader and Tom Blyth. However, I also noticed an important limitation: the IMDB list is a community created and has been reviewed by or verified by IMDb. This was a good reminder that even sources that look authoritative should still be  investigated rather than automatically trusted.

CONCLUSION

After going through these steps, I think the claim that rom-coms are making a comeback in 2026 is supported by the evidence, but let me clarify “comeback”. The evidence does not necessarily prove that today’s romantic comedies are as culturally influential or universally loved as the movies from the 1990s and early 200s. In fact, the BYU article shows that some viewers think newer rom-coms have less originality, weaker dialogue and more predictable plots.

There is stronger evidence that the genre itself is becoming more visible again. Real simple  identifies a larger number of new romantic releases and provides audience numbers for major parts of the current film landscape. Movies such as Finding Emily and The Love Hypothesis also provide specific examples of new romantic stories reaching audiences in 2026. This is why taking a few extra steps to verify information is important. Something can feel true even when it’s not.
